John Beal  > Photography > 2008 > Top Twelve

Volume 3

interestingly, when rating my own pictures, my preferences tend toward minimal or repeated subjects. that's not necessarily what i look for in others' shots, though. perhaps i'm looking for ideas or new places. maybe i consider the settings of my shots too commonplace to exploit, so i concentrate on a single aspect.

with that in mind, here are what i consider the top 12 from 2008. mostly, they fall into one of the categories above, either an isolated subject or a repeated or patterned subject. like vols i & ii, they are not presented in any particular order.

so as to not confuse smugmug's rating, photorank has been turned off in this gallery, but the originals may be rated - use the links at each picture.

John Beal > pairs.

it's not often that atlanta gets snow enough to enjoy photographically, but this past year the 'tremendous' snowfall resulted in a light dusting that lingered for several days.

i spent the 'snow day' out and about looking for opportunities.

John Beal > pairs ii.

i know of photographers that really dislike the midday light. it can, ironically, create harsh shadows up close and flat vistas at a distance. i suppose if i concentrated on portraits, i might join in their disdain.

for me, though, the harsh sun acts like a spotlight, and, with the distant shadows, isolate the subject. i frequently look for the light filtering through the trees to spotlight a subject.

John Beal > isolation.

separation in a natural setting provides minimal subject matter. i frequently look for shots for my resiliency in nature series, which typically presents plant growth sprouting from something other than soil.

John Beal > isolation ii.

separation from the crowd fits both of the criteria; minimalism and patterns (albeit chaotic). the separation provides texture to the background, while the object hints at the detail not seen in the distance.

John Beal > isolation iii.

one of my better shots of the moon, the ultimate in isolation. during this past year i've worried less about digital noise, less about elaborate post processing, and hopefully more about subject and composition, although i'm sure that i've posted more than a few pictures this year that would be evidence against that last point.

i posted significantly fewer pictures in 2008 - 471 vs 772 in 2007. i'm not sure yet if it's an indication of apathy, lack of opportunity, or a discriminating eye.

John Beal > patterns.

too numerous in repetition to be minimal, but simplistic enough in subject. it's guaranteed to get you to look at the main object, even if there really isn't one.

John Beal > patterns ii.

perhaps chaotic or random, but it can still be perceived as patterned. the lone red leaf jumps in for accent or flavor. i've shot reflections, drops, ice and insects that were waiting for me as i returned to my car. so many that they've got their own metagallery on the car rooftop; my favorite, from 2006, made it to Top12 vol i.

John Beal > patterns iii.

patterns for texture, to augment the object. i work near an older commercial district that has several dead tracks. this particular one has trees growing between the rails except for this small stretch.

John Beal > point of view.

an alternate way of seeing an object forces the viewer to think differently about it. change the angle, don't show as much, seductively luring the viewer toward something that they're sure is there but can't see.
