John Beal  > Photography > 2007 > Top Twelve, vol 2
When I sat down to look over the year's output, I didn't think that I would come up with 12 shots that would rival last year's Top Twelve. After viewing in timeline mode and making notes of possible entries, I had a list of 33. Far more than I thought were there. I guess perception gets tainted with experience and mood.

With autumn came a spate of snapshots and "out of element" shots. Quantity was there, but mostly these were shot as memorabilia. Valid as that is, it doesn't necessarily feed any artistic bent within. So the year ended with November and December daily photo galleries somewhat "lighter" than the others.

Of the 33 candidates, only 11 came from the last half of the year. Granted, vacation affords many photo-ops and, thus, has padded the front half of the year.

So here they are, a subjective list of what I think is representative of my photographic output for 2007, presented in no particular order. In the gallery comments I've added a list of honorable mentions.

John Beal > a new generation.

2008 brought a record drought to the southeast, and atlanta wasn't spared. with neighboring states arguing over who owns the water in the north georgia lakes and threats of suing the corps of engineers, it seemed like it was going to get ugly.

is it a lack of suitable planning that leads to all the posturing? with a little more rain in the winter months, I wonder how quickly we'll forget that the problem is still there.

without the rainfall, I wasn't really expecting the fall colors to be there this year, but was pleasantly surprised to find a few local spots that were worthy. this one comes from a new county park, opened this past year, providing recreational opportunities for a new generation.

John Beal > antiquity

it has a look of nostalgia, but the elements aren't antique. that's one of the beauties of photography, being able to show what the photographer saw in his mind, and not necessarily what he saw with his eyes.

John Beal > awareness

I'm not much for portraits, but I enjoy candids, which requires the subjects to be unaware of the camera. a good book, conversation, and a warm setting sun can be the photographer's ally.

the camera has made me much more aware as I consider what of my surroundings might make a good shot. a side effect of this is that I'm constantly aware of who has the camera and which direction it is pointed.

John Beal > exception to the rule

in art, sometimes you have to ignore the rules. yes, the rules will get you a better result more times than not, but they'll likely get you the same shot that everyone else got. that may not be a bad thing, but will it get you the exceptional shot? the individual shot?

the digital era affords us the opportunity to practice the rules and get the 'normal' shot. but it also lets us, with no additional costs, experiment beyond the rules. from that, you might stumble onto a style that pleases.

John Beal > heritage

the first church that stood on these grounds was built in 1736, with charles wesley conducting the first service. while the current structure dates back to 1884 and is still in use today, it is young by comparison to the cathedrals of Europe.

also in use today are the many hymns written by mr. wesley, incorporated into hymnals, and sung nearly every sunday.

John Beal > home, james

I'm most fond of 'found' shots. this was shot from the driver's seat on the way home from work one evening. based on the scratches on the door and side panel, I'd say that this pooch already feels that he's home.

John Beal > hot doughnuts now

every childhood needs fun experiences, something to remember fondly later in life. this shop on ponce de leon used to make the doughnuts for the metro area. it's been recently renovated, but the magic is still there, with a large viewing window for the remaining on-site production line.

it's nice when new can embrace the joys of the old, unsuspectingly triggering nostalgic remembrances.

John Beal > improvisation

I had started out chasing an eclipsing moonrise, a rare enough event. to the east, however, was a dense cloud bank obscuring the sky and any chance I had at capturing the celestial event. to the west was entirely different, with a most glorious sunset. while getting to a location to capture the western sky, I happened upon the framed church and setup to get this shot.

John Beal > juxtaposition

it's hard to miss the suspension bridge leading south from brunswick, but you have to travel to find the old boardwalk leading across the marsh to a dock no longer there. the obvious similarities in stark contrast to the differences drew me to this shot. the haze that fades away the background, variations in engineering design...I keep viewing this one with expectations of even more contrasts.
